Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of $16 billion, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Controversies and Media Attention

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
