2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Follows Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s management and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting him next week. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
The President
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or platforms, but fans can look forward to additional details as development continues.
